Dental Flipper

A missing tooth is a common problem which happens to all of us. Worse if it is the front tooth that it is missing. The cheapest solution to that problem is to acquire a dental flipper. However a dental flipper is not permanent, usually it is placed in the patient while waiting for a permanent type of artificial denture – but also more expensive – like dental bridge, partial denture, and dental implant.

The material used for the dental flipper is acrylic. First the dentist creates a model of the patient’s mouth by taking an impression.  The impression is then sent to a laboratory and a description of the colour of the patients tooth is also included. Then, an acrylic tooth that will match the missing teeth is made and its colour matched with the provided description. The tooth is then attached to a pink plate which is moulded to fit the patient’s mouth. The dental flipper is then attached with the use of acrylic snaps that is placed between the teeth. Another method of attaching the dental flipper is using a small wire which has small circular ends but it is a little more expensive.

A more visually appealing versions of dental flipper is also available nowadays like valplast flipper. The main difference of valplast is that it can be made translucent and more flexible so it is more comfortable to wear.

While the original purpose of dental flipper is to provide a temporary replacement for a missing tooth, some patients wear them for a long time as they would a permanent denture. The main drawback of this practice is that it is not healthy for the gums because dental flippers presses lightly on the gums and this creates additional pressure.

Another disadvantage of dental flippers compared to other dentures is that they are not as durable. They break easily and is not intended to eat on for hard type of foods. Some people try to repair it with glue when it breaks but this is not a good practice since the glue may be toxic. It is better to bring it back to dentist in case this happens. It is also recommended to remove it during meals which can be a hassle or an embarassment when eating in a restaurant.

The cost of dental flippers may range from $100 to $500. But the costs depends on the quality of the flippers. Some patients chooses the dental flipper instead of an implant because they have fear of oral surgery. Dental implants are scarier and costs more than flippers, however it is a permanent solution to a missing tooth. Dental implants are also healthier on the gums compared to the dental flipper.

If you feel that you wanted to know more about this, it is better to talk with your dentist. That way you can also ask how much do they charge and how long they can manufacture it.

Just a reminder, when you do have a flipper, do not forget to practice proper oral hygiene, brush your teeth three times a day and soak the dental flipper in cleaners at least once a day.
